.17.

“He was friendlier than I was expecting,” Khari said, opening the door to their suite and waving Eden ahead of him. “They all were. I don't know exactly what I was thinking would happen here, but acceptance without a blink wasn't a part of it.”

Eden crossed the room, stroking his hand over the roughened alabaster walls as he went, and looked out of the window casement carved into the far wall. He gazed over the flickering lights, shining in the windows of the houses built below, flickering golden evidence of life spreading out like a blanket along the mountain pathway. He sighed gently and pulled the thick velvet curtains together, blocking out the world and trapping in the heat from the roaring open fire that had been built and lit while they ate.

“I don't see how anyone could do anything else but love you,” Eden said, very quietly. He did not turn around, looking down at the surface of the sideboard instead. Suddenly nervous and unsure, now he finally had Khari to himself. Unchaperoned. Alone.

Khari moved at the edges of Eden's vision, leaning on the narrow end of the pale white wooden sideboard, watching Eden's face carefully; something that should have been disconcerting, but Eden had got used to the direct unblinking stare that seemed to study his mind and thoughts. His soul, maybe. He did not know what it was Khari saw when he studied people in his own unique way, but that he saw something, Eden had no doubt at all. He slowly met Khari's eyes and waited.

Khari frowned slightly before his face relaxed into something that wasn’t quite a smile, but was close. “Are you scared I’m going to jump you and bend you to my will?” he asked, very softly. “Or scared that I’m not?”

Eden laughed. He couldn't help himself. Shaking his head, he snorted quietly and lifted a shoulder. “I don't know. I’ve never been in this kinda scenario before. I don't know what to expect, what I want, what I don't want…hell, I don't got a clue what…” He sighed, holding his hands out to his sides and letting them fall again. “I don't know what I’m doing,” he said. “I don't want to screw things up. I waited too long and want you too much to…damnit, my words broke,” he muttered, rubbing a hand over his face. Seeing Khari still staring at him, slight amusement lighting his eyes, made him blush hotly. He felt stupid.

Khari pushed himself away from the sideboard and stood up straight, his chest a hairsbreadth from Eden's. Without looking away from his face, Khari raised his hand, tugging silently on the silk laces holding the neck of Eden's shirt. He waited a beat before using his fingertips to slide the silken lawn from Eden's shoulders, the fabric falling in a waterfall of cream to hang around his hips, held in place by the waistband of his trousers.

Leaning to skim his lips along Eden's collarbone, Khari smiled into his eyes.
